Aireborough GPs help patients gear up for winter with a flu clinic

For the first time, GP practices in the Aireborough area will be working in collaboration with a community organisation to deliver a flu clinic on Monday 25 September in Yeadon.

The locality leadership team, which consists of; Dr Adrian Rees a GP at Yeadon Tarn Medical Practice, Amanda Jowsey a Lead Nurse at Rawdon Surgery and Gill Driver who is the Practice Manager at Rawdon Surgery, have been working in partnership with AVSED (Aireborough Voluntary Services to the Elderly). AVSED aim to reduce social isolation for older people within the community, eligible patients will get the chance to get protected against the flu.

To receive the flu vaccination people must be registered with one of the following practices; Menston and Guiseley Practice, Rawdon Surgery, Guiseley and Yeadon Medical Practice and Yeadon Tarn Medical Practice. Or, be a member of AVSED to receive the vaccination.

The purpose of the flu clinic is to encourage people to have their flu vaccination; it’s also a great opportunity to bring people in the community together. To book an appointment you will need to contact your GP practice or contact AVSED if you’re a member.
All four practices will be working in partnership with AVSED, who will be arranging transport for people who have limited mobility and people can also bring their carers to the clinic if they want to. If the carer is registered with any of the four practices, they can also receive the vaccine on the day.

It’s great for AVSED to be working alongside local practices to deliver the flu clinic. On the day we will have tea, coffee, soup and smoothies as well as offering massage sessions. If you’re unable to have a massage on the day, you can book ahead onto a future session. This will also be an opportunity for local people to find out how AVSED can help them.

This is an example of innovative work being carried out in our area, seeing local practices work with AVSED demonstrates the value of community partnerships to improve the health and wellbeing of local people. Encouraging people to attend this one day clinic will help protect vulnerable patients against the flu. People will also be able to see what their local community has to offer, as well as getting to know others within their community.

All four practices will be using funds, which have been awarded by NHS Leeds Clinical Commissioning Groups Partnership, to help them deliver the flu clinic. The purpose of the fund is to improve the wellbeing of the local community.

The flu clinic will take place on Monday 25 September from 12.30 – 4pm at AVSED, ANSA Clubhouse, Nunroyd Park, Yeadon, Leeds, LS19 7HR.
