The Avenue practice closure

Lead: NHS Leeds CCG

Period: 14th Jan 2021 - 25th Feb 2021

An engagement for patients registered at The Avenue GP Practice in Alwoodley.

Brief description of project

The GP at The Avenue GP practice in Alwoodley resigned at the end of 2020. NHS Leeds CCG accepted the resignation and looked at alternative arrangements for the practice population. As the building was not suitable for the delivery of high quality, modern healthcare services in the long term, the practice closed on 31 March 2021.

Who did we speak to?

We invited people registered at The Avenue practice to give us feedback. 26 people completed our online survey and 29 people joined our two online public meetings.

What and how did we ask?

We wrote to all households registered at the practice to tell them about the change and how to register with another local GP practice. We encouraged them to contact us if they had concerns or comments about the change, and developed FAQs from these comments.

We asked people which three things are most important to them when making an appointment at a GP practice, and asked them to provide comments about moving to a new GP.

People used online or paper surveys to share their views. We held two online public events where people could find out more and ask questions.

What did we do?

We are using the engagement with patients to support people to register at another local GP practice of their choice and will use people’s feedback to improve similar processes in the future.

Following feedback from patients and members of the Patient Participation Group, we have done the following:

  • Created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to ensure that any common questions are captured in one place. You can read the FAQs in the ‘Downloads’ section below.
  • Supported PPG members of The Avenue to make contact with PPGs at Alwoodley and Meanwood GPs to enable them to continue their involvement work with their new practices.
  • Set up some temporary contact email addresses that patients can use to order their repeat prescriptions while the new online service is set-up for The Avenue patients (this information is in the FAQ, below).
