Improving Access to Primary Care for People with Learning Disabilities

Lead: Leeds West

Area: Leeds West

Period: 28th Oct 2014 - 31st Mar 2015

People with learning disabilities often have more complex health problems and may not always get equal access to healthcare, due in part to communication difficulties. There is evidence that shows people with learning disabilities have asked for better information to ensure that services are more accessible and health inequalities are reduced.

We are seeking views from people with learning disabilities, their carers or parents of a person with learning disabilities. We wanted to see how we can improve their experiences of using primary care services (access to your local GP practice) within west Leeds.

GPs, practice nurses, and other healthcare professionals may need specialist skills and communication training, which service users with learning disabilities could support them with.
