Developing Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programmes in Leeds

Lead: NHS Leeds CCG

Period: 2nd Mar 2020 - 31st Mar 2020

The aim of this engagement was to gather feedback about the cardiac (heart) and pulmonary (lung) rehabilitation programmes to help shape their future development.

Brief description of the project

People may be referred to cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation programmes if they have recently been diagnosed with a heart or lung condition, or have recently experienced a worsening of their condition, and a health professional thinks that they would benefit from attending the programme.

Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programmes are provided by two separate services within Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust (LCH) – the Cardiac Service and the Respiratory Service.

The aim of this engagement was to gather feedback about the cardiac (heart) and pulmonary (lung) rehabilitation programmes to help shape their future development.

Who did we speak to?

We wanted to speak to:

  • people who have attended the programme, including families and carers
  • people who have decided not to attend the programme, including their families or carers.
  • staff members from Leeds Community Healthcare, Active Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, and GP Practices.
  • We also want to speak to members of the public including a range of targeted community groups such as; women, men and white British and Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities
  • People with physical and mental health difficulties

What and how did we ask?

We asked people:

  • who have used the programme, what they liked and what could be done differently.
  • who decided not to attend, why they decided not to attend.
  • members of the public, if they were referred to the programme, what would encourage them to attend.
  • staff members, how we could develop the programmes.

We wanted to hear from people via two surveys, one for cardiac (heart) and one for pulmonary (lung) rehabilitation programmes.

We also held focus groups to target key communities. The focus group were run by Voluntary Action Leeds. Please note, that due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) we had to cancel a number of these focus groups. People who were planning on attending these focus groups but were unable to had the opportunity to talk through this engagement with someone and give us their feedback via email or telephone.

What did people tell us?

Patients who attended the rehabilitation programmes were positive about their experience and how it had helped improve their confidence and wellbeing. They told us that the regular meetings provided a regular space to socialise and offer peer support to other attendees.

People told us that waiting times, accessing the venues and scheduled sessions could be difficult and may be a barrier to attending. This includes the location, timings of sessions, and access to transportation. People also told us how important clear and easy to understand communication is as well as its importance in encouraging uptake.

What will we do?

The report makes a number of recommendations for how both cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programmes can be developed. We have shared the report with the project team who will work to address these recommendations and improve the rehabilitation programmes. We will follow up on our engagement report by creating some ‘You Said, We Did’s’ in the future.
