Information governance & data security

Sharing and storing sensitive images – 26 June 2020

The transformative changes in the NHS have seen us introduce telephone and video consultations. While this has helped us deliver services safely during COVID-19, we are aware that concerns have been raised about the sharing and storing of images that could be of a sensitive nature or ones that could breach laws around child protection as well as other vulnerable groups.

The Leeds Information Governance Steering Group has produced a position statement addressing concerns about sending and storing potentially sensitive images.

Data extraction exercise – 18 May 2020

You will have recently have received a communication from NHS England confirming that NHS Digital is extracting and uploading personal confidential data for COVID-19 pandemic planning and research purposes. To help you with this we’ve produced a briefing note  outlining the process for this exercise and the legal framework for doing so. The briefing note includes links to statutory notices as well as an Excel spreadsheet outlining the data codes being used. All GP Practices in England are legally required to share data with NHS Digital for this purpose under section 259(1)(a) of the 2012 Act.

COVID-19: Increased patient information for health and care professionals – 23 April 2020

To help the NHS to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, NHSX and NHS Digital are improving the access that doctors, nurses and other authorised health and care professionals have to medical records and information. This will help them to more safely treat and advise patients who are not attending their usual GP practice or who have called NHS 111.
