Anticipatory / End of Life Medicines

Process for rapid delivery of end of life medication – 10 July 2020

Due to the speed in which some patients with COVID-19 can deteriorate, a new process has been developed to provide urgent end of life medicines within one hour.

The service will reduce delays in obtaining stock and ensure a rapid delivery, benefitting patients, their carers, and health and social care staff who may have otherwise had to go to pharmacies to collect these items themselves.

For a copy of the full briefing and process, please contact leedsccg.medsoptcommissioningteam@nhs.net.

Otherwise, please continue to access anticipatory medicines in the usual way.

Community pharmacies generally hold small stocks of these drugs and can order from wholesalers for daily delivery. A number of pharmacies in Leeds are commissioned by NHS England to hold larger stocks which are available for more urgent need. At the time of writing, it is not legal for care homes to maintain stocks of these medicines. Please read the briefing below which includes links to further clinical guidance.
